Sharing What We Know
Interest in Aboriginal ActNow as a unique cross-government, partnership-based health promotion strategy focusing on communities is growing locally, provincially, nationally and internationally. Our Aboriginal ActNow BC team has given presentations and workshops about the initiative and distributed health promotion materials at such diverse gatherings as:
- Journees annuelles de sante publique (JASP) 2008, Quebec City, November 17-19, 2008. This event drew 1,200 public health representatives from Quebec, across Canada, and internationally to explore the theme of "social inequities and health," including a workshop focused on the issue of inequalities in Ab
original health. Aboriginal ActNow materials were translated and widely distributed.
- World Indigenous Peoples' Conference: "Indigenous Education in the 21st century: Respecting Tradition, Shaping the Future," Melbourne Australia, 2009. More than 3,000 delegrates gathered for this event, which included presentations on Aboriginal ActNow and the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health, highlighting the role of community-based health promotion in addressing chronic disease.
- Early Child Development Home Visiting Forum, Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, October 14-17, 2008. This first pan-Canadian forum explored the contribution of public health home visiting to early child development. Co-hosted by the National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health and the National Collaborating Centre for the Determinants of Health, the forum facilitiated the sharing of ideas and current knowledge amongst more than 120 delegates around effective strategies for home visiting.
- Honour Your Health Challenge, Vancouver, B.C. October 20-23, 2008. This annual provincial event trains community headers or "champions" to deliver the Honoour Your Health Challenge in their communities and motivate individuals to meet their personal health goals. Aboriginal ActNow materials provided information support in the four pillars of preventive health promotion.
- Second Forum on Aboriginal Social Determinants of Health:
February 17-19, 2009, Vancouver B.C. The National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health hosted this national event with funding support from ActNow BC and other partners. Several presentations highlighted the Aboriginal ActNow initiative, and materials were disseminated to representatives from national Aboriginal organizations, as well as to practitioners, policy-makers and researchers.
