Aboriginal Health Report in BC: Gaps closing but chronic disease, HIV-AIDS rates high

The health gap between aboriginal and non-aboriginal people in British Columbia is closing in key areas such as life expectancy and employment rates - but is worsening when it comes to HIV transmission rates in aboriginal communities and rates of chronic disease.

Dr. Perry Kendall, in his report "Pathways to Health and Healing: 2nd Report of the Health and Well-being of Aboriginal People in British Columbia" released June 25, 2009, analyzed 64 health indicators, including: determinants of health, healthy beginnings (pregnancy, infants and children); diseases and injuries, and health services.  Since the first report in 2001, 18 indicators have shown improvements; 10 have worsened and eight show increasing rates of chronic diseases.

More information and copies of Pathways to Health and Healing are available electronically at www.hls.gov.bc.ca/pho or from the Office of the Provincial Health Officer, Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport, 4th Floor - 1515 Blanshard St., Victoria, B.C. V8W 3C8.
