Welcome!
The National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health at the University of Northern British Columbia supports Aboriginal communities across Canada in realizing their public health goals.
In B.C., the centre hosts two healthy living initiatives for First Nations, Métis, and urban Aboriginal communities across the province:
-
Aboriginal ActNow BC, encouraging healthier lifestyle choices, and
-
Aboriginal Preschool Vision Screening, supporting vision screening and eye health in children before they start school at the age of six.
Aboriginal ActNow BC is designed to address risk factors and reduce chances of developing a chronic disease such as high blood pressure or diabetes. Aboriginal ActNow BC supports healthy choices relating to four pillars of health:
- Nutrition
- Physical activity
- Healthy choices in pregnancy
- Tobacco use
Aboriginal Pre-school Visual Screening ensures that:
- parents and early childhood educators in Aboriginal communities receive important information about children’s eye health and vision;
- Aboriginal children receive early intervention and treatment.

The National Collaborating Centre for Aboriginal Health (NCCAH) is in its third year of implementing these two collaborative, provincially funded health initatives. A major part of their success is a result of the centre's partnerships with the First Nations Health Council, Métis Nation British Columbia, and the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres. Through these organizations, the NCCAH has been able to engage directly with communities in developing health promotion activities that are relevant and meaningful for community members.
The Aboriginal ActNow and Preschool Vision Screening initiatives are shedding light on the possibilities for integrated, coordinated health promotion that builds on relationships, strengthens collaboration, and puts communities at the centre of culturally relevant programming.
